FAQs / Help

Can I take my dog on the train?

To ensure the comfort and safety of all our passengers, we only allow assistance animals to be brought on board our trains. As a heritage narrow-gauge railway, our carriages have limited space, and unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate pets of any kind regardless of their nature, with the exception of registered assistance animals. Due to the carriage compartments, it wouldn't be a nice experience for pets either. This policy has been put in place following previous experiences where pets caused disruptions, including incidents of barking, fouling, guests having allergic reactions and even animals fighting with each other. Guest experience is paramount and this decision is based on that.

What time should I arrive?

We ask that you arrive at least 1 hour prior to departure for parking, collecting your tickets and to watch our cinema presentation. You will also have time to utilise the various facilities available. This will allow you ample time to relax, watch, shop, dine, and enjoy the picturesque surroundings of Llanberis Station before embarking on your journey aboard the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Please be advised that tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable, so it is imperative that you do not miss your scheduled departure time. Additionally, we strongly advise that you make use of the restroom facilities before boarding, as there are no toilets available during the duration of your journey.

How do I get to Snowdon Mountain Railway?

The Snowdon Mountain Railway station is in Llanberis (LL55 4TU), just off the A4086, with parking available behind the station. The nearest mainline station is Bangor, around 10 miles away, and local buses stop at Llanberis Maes Padarn. For travel details, visit www.traveline.info or call 0871 200 22 33.

Is there parking at the railway?

We have a small pay-and-display car park behind the station on Victoria Terrace (LL55 4TU). Payment can be made by coins or card via a QR code located at the payment terminal. Parking is limited during peak times. Additional parking is available throughout Llanberis at a charge. Please arrive 1 hour before your train departure. Please note, the car park opposite the station is not operated by Snowdon Mountain Railway. Please be advised of the parking tariffs for the Snowdon Mountain Railway car park, situated behind Llanberis Station on Victoria Terrace:

- 30 minutes: Free

- 4 additional hours: £6

- 8 additional hours: £12

- 12 additional hours: £18

Do children go free?

Children aged 2 or under may travel free of charge (1 child per fare-paying adult), providing they sit on an accompanying adult’s lap and do not occupy a seat. A child ticket is for children aged 3-15 years old. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while travelling on the railway.

What time are the trains?

The first train is scheduled to leave Llanberis Station at 9.00am with subsequent trains scheduled for departure at 30-minute intervals throughout the day subject to passenger demand. If you plan on purchasing a ticket on the day of travel, we highly recommend booking online before your journey to ensure availability and avoid any potential disappointment.

How do I make an advance booking?

Advance bookings are made via our website and are subject to a £4.00 administration charge per booking (not per ticket). During busy periods, such as school holidays and spells of fine weather, we can sell out weeks in advance, so it’s always better to pre-book before travelling to avoid disappointment.

Are tickets available to purchase on the day?

If tickets become available for purchase on the day, they are sold online and from the ticket office at Llanberis Station from 8.15am daily. During peak holiday periods, particularly in good weather, all of our trains may be sold out so advance booking is highly recommended.

Can I pay with credit/debit cards at the railway?

We accept all major credit and debit cards except American Express. However, please note that due to the remote location of our railway, card machines may occasionally be unavailable. We recommend bringing cash as a backup to ensure a smooth visit.

Where do I collect my tickets from?

All pre-booked tickets must be collected from the Ticket Office at Llanberis Station on the day of departure. Simply present your booking reference number or confirmation to retrieve your tickets.

Can I get a single ticket down?

Single tickets for descending the mountain cannot be reserved in advance and are only available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Snowdon Summit. A return ticket is only valid when boarding a train at our Llanberis Station. We unfortunately cannot allow passengers to hike to the summit and then use a return ticket solely for the journey back down. This policy is in place because there have been previous instances where sudden high winds have prevented guests trains from departing the station, leaving passengers stranded at the summit without a means of transportation back down.

What if I have booked Ticket Protection Cover with TicketPlan and need to make a claim?

If you have purchased Ticket Protection Cover through TicketPlan and need to make a claim, you can do so by visiting www.ticketplangroup.com/refund-application-form to complete an online refund application form. Alternatively, you can email them at refunds@ticketplangroup.com to request a form.

We recommend reaching out as soon as possible after you become aware of any circumstances that might lead to a claim. Please note that as TicketPlan is an external partner, the Snowdon Mountain Railway team is not able to process or assist with claims directly. However, the TicketPlan team will be happy to help and guide you through the process.

What if I am late and miss my train?

In order to provide a seamless experience for all passengers, our trains operate on strict departure schedules and cannot be delayed for latecomers. Unfortunately, if you miss your scheduled departure, you will need to purchase additional tickets, based on availability. Due to high demand, our trains are often at full capacity, making it difficult to accommodate late arrivals on other trains.

Llanberis is a popular destination throughout the year, and we ask that you arrive 1 hour before your scheduled departure time to ensure a smooth boarding process. Your punctuality is greatly appreciated as it allows us to maintain the efficiency and timeliness of our services for all passengers. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

What happens if the weather is bad – can I get a refund?

Our trains operate in all weather conditions, including rainy, cloudy, or inclement weather. In rare instances, extreme winds on the mountain may necessitate a shorter journey or even cancellation. Visibility on the mountain can change with the click of a finger. As a result, visibility cannot be guaranteed as part of the journey itself. In the event that your train must be cancelled, you will have the option to reschedule your booking for another day or receive a full refund. The safety of our team and visitors is paramount. Please be advised that in the event of adverse weather conditions, if you choose not to travel voluntarily and the trains are running as scheduled, your ticket will be forfeited without a refund. Please visit the Met Office website and search for Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon Summit for your chosen day. This will give you an idea of conditions and visibility.

Do you provide access for those with disabilities?

Snowdon Mountain Railway operates a disabled access policy. Wheelchair users are asked to call us to discuss their specific requirements prior to booking.

Are there toilet facilities?

There are facilities at Llanberis Station and up at the summit visitor centre when the building is open (May - October, weather permitting). There are no toilet facilities onboard the trains, at Clogwyn Station or Rocky Valley.

What time does Hafod Eryri open?

Hafod Eryri opens from 10.00 am daily from the 1st of May to the 25th of October (weather permitting) and will close 20-minutes before the last train leaves the summit. On bad weather days and when access to the summit via train is not possible, Hafod Eryri will remain closed.

Can I take a rucksack, pushchair or bike onto the train?

We apologise for the inconvenience, but we are unable to accommodate large, bulky items due to limited space. However, pushchairs can be left (at the owner's risk) at the platform in Llanberis Station. These can then be collected on your return.

What is the experience duration?

We advise that the entire journey, from beginning to end, lasts approximately 3.5 hours for a round trip to the summit. This timeframe accounts for arriving at least 1 hour before your scheduled departure time. For return journeys to Clogwyn (third of the way up the mountain), the experience would take approximately 3 hours.

Can I get a single ticket up?

Single tickets for the Traditional Diesel Service can be purchased in advance online (subject to a £4.00 booking fee per transaction) or at the Llanberis Station ticket office when available, exclusively for the journey up the mountain.
